Mission and Priorities

About us

The Baxter International Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Baxter International Inc., helps organizations increase access to healthcare in the United States and around the world. The foundation, established in 1981, began to focus exclusively on increasing access to healthcare in 2002 - particularly for the disadvantaged and underserved - in and near communities where Baxter employees live and work.

In each of these efforts, the Foundation's fundamental purpose is to make a positive and lasting impact on healthcare and the health of communities around the world.

Throughout the world, limited government funding for healthcare, growing numbers of uninsured or underinsured, natural and man-made disasters combine to increase the need for healthcare services. At the same time, many nonprofit health organizations face budget and staff limitations, struggling to meet the needs presented to them daily.

Grants program

Through its grant program, The Baxter International Foundation funds programs or projects that improve the access, quality and cost-effectiveness of direct healthcare services.

Focusing on these priorities, the Foundation makes grants to projects that are expanding access to direct healthcare services to disadvantaged or underserved populations in and near communities throughout the world where significant numbers of Baxter employees live and work.

Health services

The Baxter International Foundation includes dental, mental health, substance abuse, and health services to the disabled, domestic violence, sexual assult, and child abuse in its definition of healthcare.

Prize programs

Through its prize programs, the Foundation celebrates excellence in community service and research in the health field. Foundation prizes, including the Foster G. McGaw Prize, are recognized as the highest honors in their fields.

Employee involvement

The Foundation also runs a number of programs that support Baxter employees in their personal philanthropic efforts. One of these programs is Dollars for Doers, which makes grants to organizations in the United States where employees volunteer.
